About The Troubadour

The Troubadour is a 500-capacity West Hollywood club in Los Angeles, built for shows that feel close even when the bill carries major names. Its concrete distinction comes from August 25, 1970, when Elton John made his American debut here; the engagement ran eight performances across six nights and turned a little-known British singer-pianist into a U.S. story almost overnight. The room still offers the scale to catch an act before arenas enter the picture.

A coffeehouse, then a launchpad

Doug Weston first operated a 65-seat coffeehouse on La Cienega Boulevard in the 1950s. In 1957, he used its proceeds to open the 300-seat Troubadour at the club’s present Santa Monica Boulevard site, shaping the place around artists with something to say instead of pure box-office pull.

The decisive early chapter arrived on August 25, 1970. Neil Diamond introduced Elton John for his first U.S. performance, opening a six-night run that placed John before an industry-heavy Los Angeles crowd while his American debut album still awaited release. Contemporary coverage described a remarkable first set; the full eight-show residency established the club as a venue where a concentrated week could change an artist’s trajectory.

Weston died in February 1999. By 2020, Ed Karayan, Weston’s former business partner, had become the sole caretaker of both the club and its building, preserving an independent operation amid a venue market increasingly shaped by national promoters.

The room now

Current bills sit in a rock, indie, pop, alternative and R&B lane, with room for rising artists alongside established performers seeking a close-range date. Booking remains selective and direct: artists submit a detailed email with music links, preferred dates and local-show history, including individual draw. Inside, expect primarily standing-room general admission. Limited first-come seating sits in the showroom balcony and beside the downstairs bar; the front bar and VIP loft use live stage monitors. The small balcony, VIP area and bar-side viewing options give late arrivals useful alternatives to the floor.
