About Johnny Brenda's

Johnny Brenda’s is a 250-capacity concert room in Philadelphia’s Fishtown, above the bar and restaurant at Frankford and Girard. Its defining feature is the two-tier layout: a handmade balcony looks directly onto the main stage, giving a small room an elevated viewing option alongside the floor. The venue sells only 250 tickets despite a 300-person upstairs code limit, a useful detail for anyone weighing a close-quarters show against a packed one.

From ringside name to opening-night bill

The name reaches back to 1967, when boxer John Imbrenda, who fought as Johnny Brenda, gave his ringside name to the neighborhood bar. In 2003, Standard Tap partners William Reed and Paul Kimport took it on as a bar and restaurant. They opened the concert space on the second and third floors in September 2006, turning the upstairs into a dedicated room while keeping the ground-floor tavern in play.

Its September 13, 2006 opening bill offers a clear snapshot of the booking idea: local acts The War on Drugs, Meg Baird, Jack Rose and Bardo Pond. The War on Drugs arrived as an Adam Granduciel-fronted neighborhood band, while Baird, Rose and Bardo Pond represented Philadelphia’s psych-folk and experimental edges. That first night gives the room’s later indie reputation a concrete starting point, rooted in local artists sharing a carefully scaled stage.

The room on show night

Johnny Brenda’s runs an adults-only room: current event listings mark shows 21+ and present a mix of in-house bills, R5 Productions dates and 4333 Collective bookings. Indie rock remains the central lane, with the calendar also making space for dance parties, experimental sets, punk, folk-adjacent songwriters and jazz-minded players. Expect general-admission viewing upstairs, with the balcony offering a clear overhead stage angle and the floor supplying the immediate crowd experience. The downstairs bar and kitchen operate daily, making it easy to arrive early or settle in after the encore.
