About Jalopy Theater
Jalopy Theater is a roughly 75-capacity room in Red Hook, Brooklyn, built for close-range folk performance. Its distinguishing feature is an unusually complete roots-music setup: a concert stage shares its home with a music school, instrument sales, rentals and repairs, a record label, and a tavern nearby. Expect a listening-room scale in which the show can feel communal, especially on nights when the chairs make way for dancing.
A rowhouse becomes a roots-music hub
Geoff and Lynette Wiley bought the three-story brick rowhouse at 315 Columbia Street on their first day in Brooklyn in 2005, then founded Jalopy there in 2006 to build a community around traditional roots music. The early programming quickly gained a durable weekly anchor: Feral Foster brought Roots n’ Ruckus to Jalopy in early 2008 after launching the variety show at Manhattan’s Village Ma in 2005. The move placed folk, blues, old-time players, and street-musician sensibilities in a dedicated Brooklyn room; the series has remained part of Jalopy’s identity. In May 2009, musicologist Eli Smith launched the first Brooklyn Folk Festival at the venue, adding an annual event to the school-and-performance model the Wileys had built.
The room today
Jalopy programs evolving folk and traditional music from New York City, the Americas, and beyond, while explicitly supporting local and traveling artists and presenting performers at every career stage. Folk, old-time, blues, bluegrass, klezmer, and global traditions form the core; the broader calendar also reaches jazz, country, Latin, indie, and rock. Inside, church pew seating and a small stage create direct sightlines, with movable chairs available for square dances. A bar and tavern next door extend the evening beyond the set.
