About Stadsschouwburg Mechelen
Stadsschouwburg Mechelen is a 393-seat theatre in Mechelen, with room for up to 450 people across parterre and balcony. Its distinction begins with the building itself: this was once the reception hall of Margaret of York’s palace, dating to 1480. For concertgoers, that means a compact, seated setting where the stage sits within a much older civic interior, with a first-floor foyer extending the evening beyond the auditorium.
A palace hall, remade for performance
The site began in 1480 as part of the palace of Margaret of York, Duchess of Burgundy and a major figure at the late-medieval Mechelen court. At the start of the 17th century, the former reception hall became a theatre, giving the room a performance history that long predates its current name and technical setup. That conversion still frames the experience: audiences enter a purpose-built stage room housed inside a former palace complex.
The defining reset came during the First World War. A bomb strike led to a near-total interior refit between 1917 and 1919, when the hall received its neo-Régence and neo-Rococo character. The present venue therefore combines a medieval shell with an early-20th-century theatre interior, a specific pairing that makes the architecture part of the show before the first note arrives.
The room for a seated show
The programme draws from classical music, indie, pop, R&B, alternative, folk, rock and jazz, alongside theatre and dance. Stadsschouwburg also hires the room for concerts, presentations and lectures, so its calendar has the broad remit of a municipal culture house. Expect fixed seating across floor and balcony, wheelchair access, an 8-by-8-metre playable stage, artist dressing rooms, and a foyer whose wall paintings were made by pupils of Gustave van de Woestyne. The scale suits focused listening and clear views of a full stage show.
