About The Shacklewell Arms

The Shacklewell Arms is a 200-capacity Dalston pub venue whose concert room sits behind the front bar. Its distinguishing feature is the double life of pub and gig space: a limited rear-room bar, a garden and courtyard, and a compact floor that puts audiences close to the set. Arrive early for a clear view; the low stage and densely filled entrance shape the room.

Green Man, reworked for the gig circuit

The site traded as the Green Man by 1789 and took the Shacklewell Arms name in 2004. The present building dates to the 1870s; for roughly a quarter-century before its relaunch it operated as a St Lucian pub, with Caribbean-style décor retained through the renovation. In 2011, local promoter Tom Baker of Eat Your Own Ears and pub operator Dan Crouch took the place on with a Hackney-based team, steering it toward gigs and club nights while retaining its pub character. That opening period supplied its clearest music marker: The Horrors introduced Skying here in July 2011, an exclusive show followed by Field Day after-parties. Time Out also recorded Toy’s 2012 residency, capturing the early emphasis on artists at a breakout point.

The room today

Programming is produced by LNZRT, with a booking identity built around emerging artists, early London appearances, indie-label showcases, and indie’s rock-adjacent branches. The concert space remains a ground-floor pub back room: step-free access reaches the bar, then a small internal step leads toward the gig room, where a temporary ramp can be provided. The garden has its own step, and the toilet is inaccessible to wheelchair users. For sightlines, stage right offers the strongest angle across the low stage.
