About The Dome

The Dome is an independent, two-room live-music venue in Tufnell Park, North London. Its principal upstairs room holds 600 standing, while Downstairs at The Dome holds 300, giving promoters two scales inside one Grade II-listed Victorian complex. The distinguishing feature is architectural as much as musical: a 60-foot swimming bath once occupied the ground floor, later becoming a cinema and now forming part of the live-event operation. High ceilings give the larger room a pronounced sense of space.

A pool, a picture house, then the stage

E. H. Blunt built the original Stanley Hall and Baths in 1884, and it opened in April 1885 with a swimming pool below and a public assembly hall above. That unusual origin still shapes the building’s split-level identity: public gathering space upstairs, the former pool room downstairs. In June 1909, the pool became a second hall and opened as the Electric Theatre cinema; the venue took the Stanley Cinema name in March 1914, before closing in 1916 amid First World War conditions. Historic England records the former baths in live-music use during the twenty-first century.

The Dome’s present music-venue chapter began in 1981. Its own account frames the operation as independently owned and operated, with a focus on underground music and emerging artists alongside established touring names. That continuity gives a show here a particular setting: a modern production room embedded in a building designed for communal recreation, then adapted for the early cinema trade.

Two rooms, flexible bills

The calendar leans toward alternative music, with heavy and experimental programming a long-running strand, while the venue also presents touring acts and newer headline talent through promoter partnerships. The upstairs hall offers a large bar, cloakroom, outdoor yard and dressing rooms, reached by a wide staircase. Downstairs sits at ground level, with a renovated bar and a viewing platform reached by stairs or ramp; the platform can provide seated viewing and wheelchair space. Both rooms use professional sound and lighting systems, so bills can move between club-scale intimacy and a 600-person standing crowd without leaving the building.
