About The Black Heart

The Black Heart is a 150-capacity Camden Town, London pub venue, built around a small live room upstairs from its downstairs bar. Its clearest distinction lies in that split-level experience: drinks and gathering begin beneath, then a narrow staircase leads toward a stage area with its own bar. Religious icons, fairy lights and posters cover the interior, giving a deliberate visual frame to a room whose small capacity keeps artists and crowd close.

A pub conversion, then a public rescue

The Black Heart began its venue life in 2009, when a former sports pub on Greenland Place became a Camden bar and gig room. The venue’s own 15-year notice dates that opening to September 2009. Its sharpest test arrived amid pandemic restrictions. In January 2021, the independent business launched #SaveTheBlackHeart and set a £150,000 target for March, explaining that permanent closure loomed without it. The fundraiser recorded 11 socially distanced shows and eight livestreams before the appeal, evidence of attempts to trade under restricted capacity. The campaign closed successfully on March 23 with £158,785 from 4,171 supporters. On March 25, the Camden New Journal reported that the target had been reached and that the venue would survive lockdown. That episode is the key chapter: a pub conversion sustained after its most serious financial crisis by a public campaign.

The room on a show night

Programming centers rock, metal, punk and indie, with club nights in the mix; the venue has also appeared on festival bills for Desertfest, Incineration Fest and Camden Rocks. The format is compact and social: a large, lively pub occupies the ground floor, while the performance room sits upstairs, reached by a narrow stairway, with a bar beside the stage. That arrangement suits audiences who want a drink and a catch-up before heading upstairs for a close-range set. The pub’s craft-beer selection, vegan menu and on-site tattoo parlour extend the pre-show hang.
