About The Auld Shillelagh

The Auld Shillelagh is a 100-standing, pub-scale music room on Stoke Newington Church Street in London. Its narrow frontage opens into premises that reach deep behind the bar, and its present Irish-pub identity dates to 1991. For a show, the defining draw is proximity: traditional sessions place performers and audience in the same compact run of rooms, with a rear garden extending the social space.

Before the sessions

The building has an older life beneath its current name. CAMRA records a dairyman’s shop here by 1848; by 1871 it had become the Horse and Groom. The property gained Grade II listing, shared with No. 107, in 1975. The Auld Shillelagh opened in 1991 as a very small bar with stools, one toilet and a dartboard, then expanded to three times its original length.

A licensing hearing in November 2011 provides a useful snapshot of the room’s evolution. Hackney approved a premises-licence variation and set garden-use hours, while the applicant described five garden benches for 25 to 30 people. The decision also recorded a commitment to keep doors and windows closed during operation, a practical detail for a late pub session within a residential street.

The room now

Today, the calendar centres Irish music seisiúns, including regular Thursday and Friday sessions at 9pm, alongside live music each week. It is a pub before it is a formal concert hall: arrive early during high-demand periods, when the house says table bookings are unavailable. Expect a long, bar-led interior with music folded into the crowd, plus the rear beer garden for breaks between sets. The listed 100-standing maximum keeps every performance close-quarters.
