About Sebright Arms

Sebright Arms in London is a 150-person basement room beneath a wood-panelled East End pub, a configuration that keeps the show and its pre-gig social life in separate but adjoining worlds. Its distinguishing feature is continuity: the site carried a music-hall association by 1885, and live performance again anchors its cellar after a 2011 rescue and reopening. The intimate scale has also made it a launchpad for early appearances by artists including Charli XCX and Courtney Barnett.

Saved for the stage

The building was operating as the Sebright Arms by 1865, with a large music hall associated with it two decades later. A 1930s rebuild reshaped it as a conventional pub, while live entertainment continued in changing forms. The pub closed in 2007, then faced proposals for demolition and flats. Tower Hamlets Council rejected the applications, opening a route back for the property; independent operator Charles Ross reopened it as a bar and live venue in late 2011. NME’s 2014 small-venue shortlist recorded a double-header by the Lumineers: one set in the live room and a second upstairs on the pub’s old piano. That split-level episode captures the basic proposition: pub gathering upstairs, close-range performance downstairs.

The room now

The current program spans electronic, indie, rock, hip-hop, folk, R&B, alternative and Latin bills, alongside karaoke and DJ-led club nights. The booking offer also welcomes gigs, club nights, private parties and creative uses, giving promoters room for one-off events. The Live Room sits in the basement, holds 150 standing, and includes its own bar plus a sound-and-lights-equipped stage. It has two levels; the rear raised section houses the bar, and its front edge gives shorter audience members a useful sightline. Access to the music room is via stairs.
