About PizzaExpress Live Chelsea (Jazz Club)

PizzaExpress Live Chelsea (Jazz Club) is an approximately 80-seat, dinner-and-show room in Chelsea, London, in the basement of The Pheasantry. Its defining feature is the building above: a Grade II-listed mid-19th-century former decorator’s premises, entered beneath a flamboyant arch supported by male caryatids. The scale favours close listening, table seating and performers whose sets benefit from an audience gathered a few feet from the stage.

A King’s Road room with several lives

The current venue occupies a building whose Victorian form began as a detached house and the former premises of a decorator, upholsterer and cabinet maker; artist and interior decorator Amédée Joubert added its elaborate façade in 1881. By 1966, the ground floor had become a nightclub, and the 1970s room hosted early appearances by Lou Reed, Queen and Hawkwind. Queen’s 1972 showcase became an especially telling rough-start night: the group played after the disco, while the invited A&R contingent failed to arrive.

A 1976 preservation campaign led by Sir John Betjeman helped secure the building’s future, followed by restoration and PizzaExpress’s arrival in 1981. The present basement music room opened in July 2010, shortly after Pizza on the Park closed in June 2010; PizzaExpress later described the Chelsea operation as that cabaret institution reincarnated on King’s Road.

The room today

PizzaExpress Live’s policy centres on intimate ticketed performances across genres, and Chelsea’s programme leans jazz, cabaret and musical theatre while also making space for R&B, soul, pop, rock, Latin, folk and electronic bills. Expect a seated basement layout beneath a restaurant spread across three floors, with food and drinks integrated into the evening. Live bands appear daily in the downstairs room, so this works best for listeners who enjoy a supper-club pace alongside the set.
