About Phonox

Phonox is a 550-capacity nightclub in Brixton, London, centred on one compact dance floor and a DJ booth set close to floor height. The club arrived in the former Plan B premises in September 2015, with a back-to-basics format that puts sound and long-form DJ sets ahead of spectacle. Its clearest draw for showgoers is proximity: the square room keeps the booth, speakers and crowd in the same immediate frame.

Plan B’s second life

Plan B closed in June 2015 after acquisition by The Columbo Group. Founded by Steve Ball, the operator retained the Brixton Road site as a club, reshaped its layout and launched Phonox that September under Andy Peyton, then director of XOYO and The Nest.

The opening idea was unusually strict: Fridays gave individual selectors all-night sets, while Saturdays belonged to a weekly Jasper James residency with guest appearances kept unannounced. Julio Bashmore and Ptaki played the opening weekend, establishing the room’s preference for DJ-led nights over conventional multi-act bills.

That format carried into Phonox’s tenth-anniversary programme in 2025, which ran from February through November and included a ten-hour Palms Trax set alongside parties with Nicolas Lutz, Objekt and A Love From Outer Space.

The room now

Phonox currently operates as an 18+ late-night club, with doors commonly opening at 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, alongside occasional earlier day parties. The programme leans toward electronic music: house, techno, disco, electro, jungle and adjacent sounds. Recent listings have given Acid Arab six uninterrupted hours and paired Egyptian Lover with FREAKENSTEIN, useful evidence of artist-led, extended-set booking. Expect a dark single-floor room, Funktion-One sound and a disco ball; the nearby downstairs lounge offers a pause away from the floor.
