A shop becomes a stage

Fine Art and Textiles graduate Hannah Turner Voakes opened Paper Dress Vintage as a Shoreditch vintage shop in September 2007. The live venue grew from that retail base after Paper Dress gained its premises licence in 2011, bringing music, arts events and a bar into the operation. The result came from practical pressure as much as creative ambition: redevelopment forced the business out of its Curtain Road home in 2015, sending it to 352a Mare Street in Hackney Central, where the current shop-by-day, events-by-night model took shape.

A 2019 Arts Council England grassroots-venue grant supplied a further turning point. Owner Steve Dix said the money would fund a new D&B PA, lighting rig and accessibility improvements; local reporting described the award as an upgrade to sound, lighting and facilities. That investment helps explain the venue’s appeal for emerging bills: it retains a small-room scale while carrying purpose-built production behind the vintage-shop frontage.

The room after dark

Paper Dress books chiefly through external promoters, alongside a small number of in-house events each month; artists can send streaming links directly to the venue. The current programme ranges across indie and alternative bands, garage rock, folk-adjacent songwriters, disco, soul, jazz fusion and electronic club nights. Gigs take place in the upstairs standing-only room, reached by 20 steps. Downstairs has step-free access to the bar and seating, plus cocktails, local craft beer and a backyard open late.
