About O2 Academy Islington

O2 Academy Islington is an 800-capacity North London concert venue in the N1 Shopping Centre, paired with the 250-capacity Academy 2 next door. Its distinguishing feature lies in a swift two-stage beginning: a purpose-built music space opened as Marquee N1 in 2002, then returned under its Academy identity the following year. The room also hosted Sparks’ ambitious 20-night 2008 album run, a scale-defying fit for this compact venue.

A brief first life, then twenty consecutive nights

The building was purpose-built for music and opened in September 2002 as Marquee N1, a music-and-dining venture backed by Eurythmics member Dave Stewart and club promoter Mark Fuller. Marquee N1 had a short tenure; the site reopened in its current Academy form on 19 September 2003, with Alkaline Trio on the opening bill. That reset established the venue’s identity as a small-scale live room within the Academy Music Group network.

Its strongest documented chapter arrived in 2008, during the Carling Academy era. Sparks played their first 20 albums in full, one per night, across 20 consecutive Islington shows between 16 May and 11 June. The series culminated with the premiere of Exotic Creatures of the Deep at Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 13 June. Academy Music Group calls the Islington stretch a record-breaking run; Music Week recorded the chronological, album-by-album schedule while it was under way.

The room today

The programme combines live shows and club nights, with Academy Music Group positioning the venue for established artists seeking an intimate setting alongside new and emerging performers. Rock and metal form the venue’s clearest musical centre, within a wider bill that also reaches indie, electronic, pop, R&B and hip-hop. The practical draw is scale: an 800-capacity main room plus the separate 250-capacity Academy 2 creates two distinct show sizes on the same N1 Centre site.
