About Islington Assembly Hall

Islington Assembly Hall is a 950-capacity concert and events room on Upper Street in London. Its distinguishing feature is the setting: a restored 1930s Art Deco assembly hall attached to Islington Town Hall, with a sprung dance floor below a tiered balcony. For a show of this scale, the combination gives the room a civic-hall grandeur while retaining a single, shared performance space for the crowd and artist.

A civic hall, mothballed and returned

Built in 1929, the hall officially opened on 15 March 1930. Its first life centred on dances, variety bills, weddings and local gatherings; the stage also hosted performers including George Formby and Diana Dors. The building closed during the 1980s, then spent almost three decades largely as Town Hall storage, while its foyer housed Islington Museum for a period. In 2009, Islington Council secured restoration funding and retained details including the stage, balcony and Art Deco fittings. The public return came in March 2010, close to the building’s 80th anniversary: a free March 5–13 showcase brought theatre, dance and classical events into the restored hall. That reopening established the present format, where commercial gigs share the calendar with civic, cultural and private events.

The room now

Expect a broad promoter-led programme spanning indie, rock, pop, hip-hop, R&B, folk, country and alternative bills, alongside conferences, weddings and community hires. The main live configuration holds 732 people standing downstairs, with 218 seats or standing places in the balcony; fully seated shows use a 433-capacity layout. The balcony supplies a raised viewing option, while the sprung floor keeps the main room geared to standing crowds. Venue production is built around an in-house PA and front-of-house setup, with a 100 dB(A) one-minute average limit.
