About Club Dada

Club Dada is a 350-standing-room indoor club in Dallas’s Deep Ellum, with an outdoor stage that lifts capacity to 550. Its distinguishing feature is a past rooted in performance art: Victor Dada created the venue as a permanent home for experimental work before the room evolved into a music-focused stop. For concertgoers, that history translates into a compact main room plus a sizable backyard option for larger bills.

A stage born from performance art

Members of the Victor Dada performance collective established Club Dada in 1986 after years presenting work across North Texas spaces, purchasing the building at 2720 Elm Street as their permanent base. A contemporary Deep Ellum chronology dates the opening to September 26, 1986, naming troupe members David Border and Tom Henvey as owners and Jeff Liles as the live-music booker. The early formula mixed music with deliberately unruly art programming: the Dallas Museum of Art records “Weird Wednesdays,” where acts such as BL Lacerta collaborated with the audience, and a 1991 Invisible Impressions performance by John Held Jr. and Paula Maples using invisible ink onstage.

The venue closed in 2003 and later returned under new ownership. In 2010, City Tavern owner Josh Florence announced a renovation that moved the bar and men’s room to the east wall, clearing floor space before the stage; his team’s second chapter developed into a touring-band room while retaining local bills. A 2016 anniversary account also recalls packed backyard sets by Courtney Barnett, Toro y Moi, Charli XCX, Lucero, and Sturgill Simpson during that revival period.

The room now

Club Dada’s calendar is promoter-led and broad: local artists share the schedule with national touring acts, with indie and folk prominent alongside rock, hip-hop, electronic, pop, funk, and post-punk. Indoors, the 20-by-14-foot stage sits two feet high and has no obstructions, a useful detail for close-range sightlines. Outdoors, the larger covered deck turns the backyard into a second concert setting. The renovated main-floor layout places the bar along the east wall, leaving the crowd space in front of the stage open.
