About Columbiahalle
Columbiahalle is Berlin’s 3,500-capacity concert hall, a 1951 American military sports hall across from Tempelhof that became a public event space in 1998. Its scale sits between club and arena: a 1,150-square-metre main room, an upper gallery and a flexible stage accommodate standing crowds or seated presentations. That former-service building origin gives a regular touring stop a specific Cold War-era frame.
From US recreation hall to concert room
Built in 1951 by the US Allies, Columbiahalle served personnel stationed at Tempelhof Airport, while the neighboring Columbia cinema completed the leisure complex. Construction came during the American occupation period, when the airport functioned as a US military facility; hall and cinema were reserved for Air Force personnel and visitors. When Allied forces departed in 1994, both properties passed to the city, and the sports hall continued in its original role through 1997. Property developer Hans J. Walter acquired the site toward the decade’s end, and Columbiahalle reopened as an event venue in 1998. A comprehensive 2014 renovation prepared the hall for its current mix of concerts, sport and commercial events.
The room today
Columbiahalle operates as a rental house: promoters take responsibility for ticketing, marketing and delivery of each event. The program centers on popular music across a wide stylistic range, with current listings spanning electronic dance, hip-hop, pop and rock alongside festival-format events. For a showgoer, the useful physical details are the adaptable stage, standing floor and balcony seating options, plus five bars spread for quick access. A permanent delay line also serves the area beneath the balcony, where direct sound from the stage has less reach.
